Started in the wake of Operation Murambatsvina, the Zimbabwe People's Support Group, under the guidance of Prof. Johan Maree, brings together members of the congregation who are concerned with the country and its people.
The operation brought the political and economic upheaval in the country to a head and sparked protest and relief efforts from churches and non-governmental organizations in South Africa.
So far the support group's activity has been concerned with gathering information about the current situation in order to find out how best to respond with limited resources but much goodwill. The group also presented two DVDs of the operation, which were well-received and prompted a spirited discussion.
The agenda for next year will take a more proactive stance and includes locating and befriending refugeed Zimbabweans in our community, taking part in petitions and demonstrations, and starting letter campaigns to newspapers and those in positions of authority. Johan will also take the opportunity to write a more academic position paper on the current state. Be on the lookout for more video evenings and addresses by visiting Zimbabweans next year.
