PRISON GARDEN PROJECT
by Joy Wanless
Mercy Swart came up with the idea of a vegetable garden to relieve the extreme boredom of our boys who are awaiting trial. They leapt at the chance to do something constructive and worked with enthusiasm to clear the ground and plant the seeds. They worked wonders with borrowed tools and a hose full of holes and no fittings.
I mentioned their efforts to Barbara Young, who is a horticulturalist, and she wanted to contribute her knowledge and expertise. She ordered the compost and the seedlings and bought fruit trees and then spent nearly a whole day helping the boys get everything planted. She also provided a few basic tools and a decent hose with proper fittings.
The boys have responded magnificently and their garden looks great. They plan to give the produce to a poor community as a way of giving something back. Thanks to all of you for your donations, we have more than covered the costs.
